Ishiguro's strong use of plot made us realize that there is more to life and that we could find happiness easily of we let go of our fears. The novel helps us to find the real meaning of life, having fate and hope will get us through anything. Through the character of Kathy, Ishiguro successfully illustrate how in the end, we will still find the meaning behind all of our actions. When Kathy felt like her world ended after Tommy died, she realized how meaningless her life is. Ishiguro wants us to realize that our feeling of disappointment shouldn't bring us down because is temporary but instead, these tragedies should makes us feel more fateful and to hope that better days would come. When the character of Tommy said, "I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it's just too much. The current's too strong. They've got to let go, drift apart. That's how it is with us. It's a shame, Kath, because we've loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can't stay together forever," shows how they realized that they should do something and try to get out of the program of Hailsham by proving that Tommy has a soul. And it also illustrates that we serve a purpose in life, that we just don't live to survive day by day.

I agree that Ishiguro wants his readers to leave from his novel that we can get through anything with hope and faith. We can learn from the clones that we need to cherish this short time on earth and and stay hopeful.
ReplyDeleteGood points, I think Ishiguro wanted to show the relationships between the clones and show that they do have souls. The relationship between Kathy and Tommy is a big sign that they can be intimate with eachother.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to hear a fresh new perspective! You really shine a bright light on a "meaningless" existence saying that because of her lack of purpose, she can rejoice. It's a very interesting idea to ponder.
ReplyDeleteYou made a really good point about what the true meaning of life really is. Different things, people, memories can all lead to a meaningful life. For Kathy, it was Tommy who made her life so meaningful. I also like your statement about our purpose in life. Everyone is designed to do something in the world and we shouldn't just go about living our life day by day. Fulfilling the purpose would make our lives very meaningful.
ReplyDeleteI like how you interpreted the ending of the story as a positive message the author wanted us to realize about life. I have a slightly different message though, I think he was trying to say that no matter who we are as beings, everyone of us will face struggles, whether they are physical or internal, what matters is how we have dealt with them. When we look back at our past we need to look at the good things that happened and learn to let go of the things we would have like to be different.
ReplyDelete• I get what you’re saying but I don’t agree. Kathy and Tommy didn’t get through any of this. The system is still in control of them and Tommy dies and Kathy is on her way to dyeing. Even with their love for each other they couldn’t get out of this system. I think Ishiguro is trying to say that we can’t play God. By creating clones so human like we are blurring the lines between what is moral and what isn’t. Instead it makes this twisted world were people who seam human are slaughter for their organs and it dehumanizes everyone that knows about it but says nothing to stop it.
