Othello Act 4 and 5
My initial reaction to Othello's act IV and V is very mixed, I felt sorrowful yet happy that the fight of Desdemona and the evilness of Iago will soon be over. The character of Iago occurred to me more than any other characters on the play. He seems to get everything he wants by easily manipulating people's personal opinion and judgements. Even from the start, it was given that Iago is the main antagonist of the play. All of his little sneaky lies and persuasions led to this big mess that unfortunately led to the death of three people. It is very sad how he can easily manipulate all of the other characters in the play; just like how actual people in this world manages to do that. This reminds me of the president; whatever he says most likely the person he told will follow his orders without thinking if its right or wrong, or what will be the outcome of his actions. It is very tempting to scream at the top of our lungs that Iago is definitely jealous and is trying to ruin every positive thing. I also sense the frustration of Iago in these acts.

I can see why Iago frustrates you since he takes people's flaws and uses it against them.I dont understand why the characters listen to everything Iago says. Alot of conflicts could have been avoided if the characters just used better communication and were more cautious around Iago. Then again Shakespeare's play wouldn't have the same effect on his audience.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Iago is using the truth and twisting it to his advantage. It bugs me that Othello listens to Iago’s words without having second thoughts of what he may be saying. I wish Othello would have talked to Desdemona or Cassio when he had the chance and resolve the issue.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you say about Iago that he manipulates everyone's judgement but at the same time it seems like everyone doesn't really put an effort to stop and really think. I like how you compared Iago's character to the president and it is true to an extent. We believe his speeches about how much improvements he will make but most do not keep their word and it does seem like this country is heading for worse.
ReplyDeleteI wish you would write a little more! You seem to have alot of good stuff to say! ^_^ I'd also still really like to question your idea of "Evil"ness in Iago, is he not acting upon the same basic motives that fuel Othello to murder his beloved wife?
